  10.   The diagnostic portion of the Diagnostic and Configuration program
  11.   is designed to make sure that the adapter is installed correctly and
  12.   functioning properly in your computer.  The Group 1 tests check the
  13.   physical components, connectors, and circuitry of the adapter and
  14.   require only that the adapter be installed in the computer.  The 
  15.   Group 2 test check the adapter's ability to transmit data on the 
  16.   network and require that the adapter be connected to a loopback plug 
  17.   or to a network.  The Group 3 test check the adapter's ability to 
  18.   correctly transmit and receive data over the network and require 
  19.   that the adapter be connected to a network on which an echo server 
  20.   has been set up.

  22.   The configuration portion of the program allows you to change the
  23.   configuration parameters for the adapter to fit the specific environment
  24.   in which the adapter is installed.

  27.   Starting the Diagnostic and Configuration Program

  30.   The computer containing the adapter to be tested or configured must be
  31.   running DOS.
  32.  
  33.   NOTE:  If this computer is an operating server, notify all users of the
  34.          server to save their work and log out from the network.  The
  35.          Diagnostic and Configuration program disrupts the normal operation 
  36.          of servers and workstations, so work that is not saved may be lost.

  38.   There are two ways to start the diagnostic and configuration program:
  39.  
  40.   1.  Automatically from the "MENU.COM" program, by selecting the options in
  41.       the Diagnostic and Configuration submenu.
  42.  
  43.   2.  Manually, from the root directory of the EtherDisk diskette by typing
  44.       the following command:
  45.  
  46.       3C509 [command keyword] [parameter list]
  47.  
  48.       Here 3C509 represents the 3Com diagnostic program name.  The brackets
  49.       indicate that the command keyword and parameter list are optional.
  50.  
  51.       3C509 without any arguments invokes the program in full windows mode.
  52.       This includes mouse support and context-sensitive help.
  53.       The optional command keywords are:

  55.       CONFIGURE - Configures an adapter either automatically or by using a
  56.                   specified adapter configuration file.
  57.  
  58.       ECHOSERVER - Enables a designated adapter to function within the echo
  59.                    server.
  60.  
  61.       HELP - Displays general or command-specific help information.  To get
  62.              command-specific help, enter: 3C509 HELP [command keyword]
  63.  
  64.       LANGUAGE - Invokes the program in full windows mode using a specified
  65.                  external resource file.  This option provides support for
  66.                  multiple languages via a different resource file for each
  67.                  language supported.

  69.       LIST - Displays a list of installed adapters recognized by this program
  70.              and their assigned adapter numbers.

  72.       RUN - Executes the diagnostic tests, which can also be specified from a
  73.             file, on a selected adapter and writes the results to the screen,
  74.             a file, or a printer.

  76.       You can use the first two characters of a [command keyword] or a
  77.       [parameter identifier] as a shortcut.  For example, 3C509 HE RU means
  78.       3C509 HELP RUN.

  81.   Using the Diagnostic and Configuration Program
  82.   ----------------------------------------------

  84.   The menus and dialog boxes that make up the Diagnostic and Configuration
  85.   program guide you through testing and configuring your adapter.  The lines
  86.   at the bottom of the display tell which keys can be used and the function
  87.   each of them performs.  Context-sensitive help is always available by
  88.   pressing the F1 key.

  90.   If the adapter fails any of the diagnostic tests, see the TROUBLE.TXT file
  91.   in the \DIAG directory on the EtherDisk diskette for troubleshooting
  92.   procedures.

  100.   the \INFO subdirectory on the EtherDisk diskette provides information about
  101.   obtaining product support for the adapter.

  103.   The TROUBLE.TXT and SUPPORT.TXT files can be automatically displayed and
  104.   printed from the "MENU.BAT" program.
